Presentation for the Heads of Cataloging Departments Interest Group at the American Library Association Midwinter Conference in Atlanta, Georgia, January 23, 2015.

Abstract:

With many of the new and upcoming tasks and workflows that are completed in cataloging units in academic libraries comes change to the organizational structure of these units. This presentation will report on the findings of a survey conducted in March and April 2016 to investigate the past, current, and future organizational structures of cataloging units in academic libraries. The survey data revealed several, compelling trends about the recent changes in  cataloging staffing models used by academic libraries with disparate sizes and funding levels.. Trends include how the organizational structure of cataloging units have changed over the past decade, future plans for restructuring cataloging, and shifting responsibilities while assuming new iterations of traditional cataloging and metadata related roles.
