Is your cataloging unit involved in the creation of metadata for the Digital Library and/or Institutional Repository?


For the 82 respondents that selected “Sort of,” there were a variety of tasks mentioned that catalogers are doing to assist those working on digital collections with metadata creation. This includes:

  • Cataloging theses and dissertations
  • Quality control
  • Cataloging Special Collections items whose MARC records are then repurposed by digital library staff
  • Training digital library staff on cataloging best practices, especially with regards to using the Library of Congress Authority Files
  • Trying to figure out how catalogers can be integrated into digital library workflows
